ODU Community Care at People in Need Ministry (PiN)

Serving those experiencing homelessness or unstable housing in the Virginia Beach oceanfront area.

ODU Community Care at the Housing Resource Center(HRC)

Academic partnership with the City of Virginia Beach and funded by Sentara Health. Serving those sheltered homeless, those experiencing homelessness or unstable housing.

ODU Community Care Mobile Health Clinic

Monday: Pediatric Focused Day and we rotate locations in the Franklin City and Southampton Public Schools. Tuesday: Partnered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, Western Tidewater Branch. Wednesday: we serve the more rural communities, including Boykins and Courtland. Every Wednesday, we serve the more rural communities, including Boykins and Courtland.

Virginia AHEC Scholars Program

The Virginia AHEC Scholars Program strengthens Virginia’s future health care workforce by training a diverse, multidisciplinary group of students committed to serving rural and underserved communities. Through scholarship funding and operational support, AHEC expands the capacity of ODU Community Care to provide high-quality, community-based care while investing in the next generation of providers.Carolyn Rutledge is a Professor and Associate Chair of Nursing. She is the project director of ODU Community Care and the Academic Director of C-Tier Telehealth. Professor Rutledge has been in Family Medicine for 32 years and in 2014 she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. In 2022 she received the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award.

Their patient-centered model, that solves health challenges faced by rural and underserved populations, is what won the 2024 Silver Rating for quality standards programs from the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC).

ODU Community Care hosts third annual back-to-school event

The 3rd Annual Pediatric Back-To-School event was hosted at the VBHEC on July 30, 2024. Over 100 students served 90 families for free school and sports physicals.

In rural Virginia, communities struggle to find enough health care workers

JW Caterine wrote a fantastic article about rural health care for the Virginia Mercury featuring our ODU team! She talks about the challenges facing rural communities and health care workers.

"Despite all of the obstacles facing rural health care workers, professionals like Speerhas and those at the ODU mobile clinic continue their work, many motivated by a simple desire to serve the community. 'I know it’s cliche, but we’re truly making a difference and making an impact,' Speerhas said. 'To wake up everyday and be able to do that, why would you not?'”

Nursing Students Bring Free Care to Rural Virginia with Student-Run Mobile Health Clinic

Read Gretel Kauffman's article in RHIhub about the importance of bringing student nurses to the "healthcare deserts" of rural Virginia, both for the community and the students' education. She talks about it as a "unique model" of impactful healthcare, quoting Dr. Carolyn Rutledge about how we draw from partnerships with the community:

“We didn't go in saying, ‘I am delivering this to you,’ because we didn't know what the communities needed,” Rutledge said. “It was important to really engage them and make it a collaboration, not something that is separate from the community.”

New Clinic just opened!

ODU CC at the Housing Resource Center opened its doors today. ODU CC at the HRC will increase access to healthcare services for HRC clients and provide clinical practicum sites for our students. Dr. Speerhas, Dr. Horvath, and Mrs. Barthold saw patients today and were welcomed by HRC staff and employees.
